Battling the Winter Boredom with some Outdoor Fun!

Up until now, we've been spoiled in Ontario with such a mild winter, but it hasn't always been this way... And I'm sure many other provinces and cities are not as lucky as we've been. We have always battled the frigid winter months with family skiing. We started skiing as a family when our eldest was 3 years old. Although challenging, it was so cute to watch them all progress to avid skiers.
You're not necessarily always going to be skiing as a family as the kids do need to take classes and you may want to do a run on your own, but our favourite part was lunch time. We would pack many cooler bags with bread, cheese, peanut butter, jelly, sandwich meats, even a sandwich press for those who wanted grilled cheese! We were sure to pack loads of fruits and veggies to keep their energy levels high all day. This gave us time to talk to the kids about their mornings and what they had learned and this was generally followed by their favourite part of the day, free ski! It gave them the opportunity to show us their new tricks and skills and they were able to feel a sense of accomplishment in what they had learned.
When most people hear skiing, they automatically think high cost but it doesn't have to be!   There are some stores with great programs that give you a trade-in coupon for your child's old ski equipment if you purchased it from them. It's always good to be sure that everything fits just right to ensure a safe ski day. We've always always insisted our children wear helmets, we wear them ourselves as well.
There are so many similar activities that are great for the family in the winter. There are numerous skating rinks throughout each city, indoor and outdoor, that offer free skate time which is another great way to spend time together.
What does your family do to stay active and together through the winter?
