Emergent Curriculum: A Play-based Approach to Early Learning
At Kids & Company, we follow an emergent approach to curriculum—a child-centered, play-based way of learning that begins with careful observation of children’s interests, questions, and developmental cues. Rather than relying on rigid, pre-set lesson plans, our educators observe what each child is drawn to and create meaningful, individualized learning opportunities that build on those interests. This responsive approach supports deeper engagement and learning by meeting children where they are—academically, socially, and emotionally.

Our outdoor space is a blank canvas that offers a variety of environments for children to explore. We have intentionally designed the area with multiple surfaces to encourage different types of play, including a paved area perfect for gross motor activities, a pea gravel section for sensory experiences, and a large deck that serves as an ideal spot for outdoor learning and group gatherings. This versatile layout allows us to constantly adapt the environment to suit the children’s evolving interests, ensuring that their time outside is as engaging and educational as their time indoors.
Meet the Director
Katelyn Casey
My name is Katelyn Casey and I am the Centre Director at the Kids & Company Kingswood location. I am a Level 2 Early Childhood Educator and have been working in child care for over 15 years. My passion for child care is deeply rooted in my own childhood, as I spent my early years in a child care centre where I had an incredibly positive and memorable experience. I still remember my educators and the meaningful impact they had on me. Those early experiences shaped who I am today and inspired me to provide the same sense of care, security, and lasting memories for the next generation. What makes our Kingswood location unique is our strong focus on building connections between home and child care, creating a seamless and supportive experience for every child. We prioritize meaningful relationships between families, educators, and children, fostering a true sense of community. Our centre is highly visual, with classroom documentation that showcases children’s learning and creative processes, and we embrace a child-led approach where programming is based on children’s interests to keep learning engaging and meaningful. We also love sensory play and encourage hands-on, exploratory experiences that allow children to learn through all of their senses.
