Celebrating Black History Month with Books for Young Readers

Black History Month is a meaningful time to celebrate the achievements, culture, and contributions of Black individuals throughout history. It’s also an opportunity to introduce young children to stories that reflect diversity, inclusion, and the importance of representation. At Kids & Company, we believe in fostering a love for learning through books that inspire, educate, and celebrate different cultures. In this blog, we will share a selection of children’s books that highlight Black history, identity, and community, perfect for sparking important conversations at home.

1. “Dream Big, Little One” by Vashti Harrison

This board book introduces young readers to Black women who have made history in a variety of fields, from activism to the arts. Featuring figures like Rosa Parks and Maya Angelou, it provides an early introduction to role models who inspire courage, determination, and big dreams.

2. “Show Me Happy” by Kathryn Madeline Allen

This book uses real-life photos of diverse children to showcase emotions, actions, and everyday moments of happiness. While not specific to Black history, it promotes representation and inclusivity, helping young readers see themselves and others in the world around them.

3. “One Love Based on Songs” by Bob Marley

Inspired by Bob Marley’s song One Love, this picture book shares a message of unity, kindness, and making positive change in the community. With colourful illustrations and a sing-along rhythm, it introduces young readers to Marley’s legacy and the lasting impact of his music.

4. “I Like Myself!” by Karen Beaumont

This lively book encourages self-confidence and embracing individuality. With fun rhymes and an empowering message, it reinforces the importance of self-love, an essential theme in Black history and culture. It’s a great way to help children develop a positive self-image and celebrate what makes them unique.

5. “No Matter What . . . We All Belong” by Becky Davies

A gentle story about inclusion and belonging, this book reminds children that differences should be celebrated. It opens the door to conversations about acceptance, kindness, and the importance of community. These are all important themes to reflect on during Black History Month and beyond.

6. “Grandma and Me” by Carole Boston Weatherford

This sweet book celebrates the special bond between a grandchild and their grandmother. Through simple text and warm illustrations, it honours the traditions, love, and wisdom passed down through generations. A great pick for reading together and recognizing the importance of family connections in Black culture.

By reading these stories together, families can create meaningful moments that encourage curiosity, empathy, and a deeper appreciation for the diverse world around them. Black History Month is just one time of the year to highlight these important stories, but these conversations can and should continue all year long. Encouraging children to see themselves and others reflected in the books they read helps build a foundation of respect, understanding, and a lifelong love for learning about different cultures and histories.

Our carefully curated books from the Kids & Company team provide an opportunity to explore important themes with children in a way that is both engaging and educational during Black History Month. Whether it's celebrating the beauty of different skin tones, fostering community unity, honouring Black culture, or inspiring future leaders, each of these books contributes to a richer understanding of Black history for children of all backgrounds.
