Bountiful Berries

This time of year is not only beautiful, but it’s also berry season! If you are looking for fresh, in-season berries you can find them from mid-May to August. Strawberries are in-season from about mid-May through to June, raspberries from early June to mid-July, blueberries from July through to early August and blackberries in August.

Your local farmer’s market is a great spot to find all of these in-season items. Why not bring your children and make a day of it? I know there are different farms in the Toronto area that are opening in June that allow you to pick your own strawberries. I’m sure many local farms across the country are about to open their doors for the season if they haven’t already. Local farms are great places for fresh berries and freshly picked fruits and vegetables. Local farm shops have the most delicious baked pies too! Later into the summer and fall seasons, you can buy delicious sweet corn and tomatoes.

To celebrate the beginning of berry season, try making this delicious jam at home with your little ones. It contains no additives or artificial flavours and a reduced amount of sugar! Oh, and did I mention it’s delicious?
