Get in the spirit of Earth Day!

Each year on April 22, the world comes together to celebrate Earth Day. It’s a great opportunity to educate your child on how and why we need to take care of our planet. As educators, it’s our responsibility to educate the children in our care on the importance of sustainable practices like reusing and recycling, and instil in them a love and appreciation for nature. To get in the spirit of Earth Day, here are some fun activities to enjoy as a family that can be used as catalysts to spark conversations around the day.

Get your garden started
Now that the weather is getting nicer, you can start growing your own garden! Your child can help you with tasks around the garden, or even create their own. They can plant little seeds in a special corner of the garden or a flower pot and tend to it - make it their job to make sure the garden gets water and plenty of sunlight and love. Explain to them how sunlight, water and love contribute to a healthy planet.

Nature Walk
Get into the spirit of Earth Day, and go on a nature walk with your family, and work together to collect items like rocks, twigs, leaves etc. When you finish your walk, fill a tray of items and have your children partake in an exploration activity. Encourage your children to describe each item with descriptive words. For example, have your children explain if the items are bumpy, smooth, rough etc. Another way to make this activity fun is by removing one of the items and having your children guess which item you have removed. To further expand this activity, you can encourage your child to create art with items you gathered from your nature walk. Teach them to appreciate the diversity and beauty found in nature!

Earth Representation
Invite your children to explore the colours of the earth using coffee filters, blue and green coloured water and eye droppers. When dropping the colored water on the coffee filter, you will see the two colours come together and replicate the Earth’s land and water masses. This is a great activity for younger children and is an opportunity to teach about the different colours we see all around us.

We hope these activities provide inspiration on ways to celebrate Earth Day with your children! Leave a comment below to let us know how you honored Earth Day today. Or tag us on social media, @Kidcochildcare, in photos or videos of your family celebrating!
