Five Rings of Olympic Glory!

What is more exciting then settling in with your family to watch the 2018 Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang County, South Korea? The two events, curling mixed doubles tournament and the men's hill ski jumping competition started their preliminary rounds on the 8th of February. The amazing opening ceremony took place one day later with the last day of competition and the closing ceremony scheduled on the 25th of February. Our family is a “ski family” which means that every winter for the past 25 years we have packed up our skiing gear every weekend and headed to the wintery white hills of Ontario to enjoy the slopes. You can only imagine how our household has been abuzz watching the fearless athletes compete, sharing stories of the winners and competitors in each discipline. Watching and discussing Olympic athlete’s laser focus and accepting nothing but excellence, is an inspiring, important life lesson to share with your children.

The goal of the Olympic Movement is to contribute to building a peaceful and better world by educating youth through sport practiced without discrimination of any kind, in a spirit of friendship, solidarity and fair play. What an incredibly vital message to teach our children!

The games will feature 102 events in 15 sports, making it the first Winter Olympics to surpass 100 medal events. Four new disciplines in existing sports were introduced to the Winter Olympic programme in Pyeongchang, including big air snowboarding, mixed doubles curling, mass start speed skating and mixed team alpine skiing. Whichever winter athlete you’re rooting for, tuck into a yummy bowl of the Kidco Kitchen Chitty Chitty Squash Chili with all the fixings. Try out our family sized recipe here.

Many Olympic dreams begin after watching our gifted athletes reach their goal and sometimes come short. Maybe you have an inspiring skater, skier, snowboard or curler? Make sure you take the time to savour and enjoy these 17 days of winter fun. To embrace winter is truly embracing being Canadian!
