Make Breakfast an Important Part of your Day!

Health Canada recommends that everyone should enjoy breakfast every day. A healthy balanced breakfast should include 3 of the 4 food groups. Children who eat breakfast are known to be more alert and content. I know that it is far too easy to grab a banana or granola bar on the way out the door especially with a parent`s busy schedule these days. Being a good role model (You know your children want to be just like you!) and showing your children the importance of a healthy balanced breakfast will have long-term benefits for their growth and development. Best of all, some research even says that balanced breakfasts may help in improving brain function.

I came across some interesting research about how breakfast can play a role in brain development and it is definitely worth a good read. Kellogg Nutrition wrote an article on “The Role of Breakfast in Brain Development and Function”. It states that a diet including breakfast may also improve brain function which is vital for our little one’s development.

The brain develops rapidly during the first two years of life. This rapid growth would need the proper nutrition to develop properly.

“Research in children and adolescents has shown that nutrients missed by skipping breakfast are not made up over the day, and breakfast skippers are more likely to fail to meet recommended intake levels of vitamins A, B6 and D, calcium, magnesium, riboflavin, folacin, zinc, phosphorus and iron” – all which have identified as having a key role in brain development.

By ensuring our children receive a healthy and balanced breakfast every day, we make sure these necessary nutrients are not missed giving them the best chance at developing into strong adults.
