I Just Might Be the Potty King

As a parent, it is sometimes funny how obsessed & excited we can become over certain milestones in our kids’ lives – especially those we take for granted as an adult.  The mere act of your child actually using a toilet or potty is definitely one of them.   And when it happens, it is like New Year’s Eve – lots of hugging & kissing, high fives, bells & whistles, confetti…ok, maybe not confetti but you get the idea.

We have been through it once already with our daughter and are preparing for it at some point over the next 6 months with our son.  Admittedly, our experience with our daughter was relatively easy (albeit intense) and as my wife was tending full time to our 6 month old son at the time, we decided it essentially would be my responsibility to ensure this little angel would be out of diapers for good.

Now, while there are countless methods, the one that we committed to and ended up working for us with our daughter was the 3 Day Potty Training method.  At its core (and admittedly by my own foggy recollection), essentially it boiled down to us committing to 3 straight days of staying home (we totally killed a perfectly good long weekend…yay) and me literally following my daughter around everywhere she went and asking her if she needed to go potty every few minutes… hundreds and hundreds of times over 3 straight days (exhausting!).

“Do you have to go potty?” “No”.

“Do you have to go potty?” “No”.

“Do you have to go potty?” “No”.

“Do you have to go potty?” “No”.

“Are you peeing on the floor?”  “Uh-oh….” (pick her up and run to the potty)

Give her a prize/sticker as reward for finishing in potty.  (Lather, Rinse, Repeat).

I think you get the idea –this happened all day long for 3 straight days…

But eventually, by the 2nd half of day 3, something just clicked and she got it and she was actually letting us know that yes, she had to go and would go on her own.  And thank God it finally clicked too as I was starting to think after day 2 that we had come so far, I might be taking a week off work just to follow it through!

So to answer the question you are asking yourself now, yes, clearly I am the undisputed Potty King in my household (I am a perfect 1 for 1, after all) and my son doesn’t stand a chance (I say with tongue placed firmly in cheek).

Anyway, I am pretty sure I know what I am doing this Sept long weekend … and you?
