Who is Your Valentine?

The origin of Valentine’s Day remains a mystery to this day, with many different stories circulating around the internet on where this lovey-dovey holiday came from. Most people think Valentine’s Day is just a holiday created by greeting card companies, however Valentine’s Day dates back to the 14th century when famous poets like Geoffrey Chaucer used to write romantic poems to their loved ones.

With Valentine’s Day approaching next week, here are some fun ideas you can do in the kitchen to celebrate Valentine’s Day with your kiddies:

Use large heart shaped cookie cutters to cut two pieces of sandwich bread into hearts. Top one piece with your favourite cheese and place the other heart piece on top.  Add a little butter to the pan, or for a healthier alternative use a panini press for a special yummy grilled cheese sandwich.

Heart shaped cookie cutters can also be used to cut fruits and veggies like bananas, watermelon, kiwi and cucumber to make eating healthy more appealing and festive! If you’re feeling super adventurous, use the cookie cutters to make healthy baked tortilla chips by cutting whole wheat tortillas and lightly applying with olive oil. Season any of your favourite herbs and spices, bake in a 350F oven for 6-12 minutes (depending on the size of your cookie cutter).  These new baked crunchy snacks are sure to be a family favourite.

I saw this simple idea online and think that this is a super fun to put in your kiddie’s lunches: Take fruits and vegetables and attach different notes to each one. For example: “You’re the apple of my eye” or “You are pear-fect”. Here are some more inspirational ideas to get you started! You can be as creative or as simple as you’d like. I think this is a great treat to put into your child’s lunch on their way to school especially on Valentine’s Day!

Whether you celebrate Valentine’s Day or not, it’s always nice to tell those special to you how much you love them. Use these fun and simple ideas all year round to feed the ones you love!
