A Twist on Turkey Day

Thanksgiving is always a wonderful time for family and friends to get together, but let’s be honest, the stage-piece of thanksgiving is what’s at the centre of the table...the food. Turkey, mashed potatoes, broccoli cheese, stuffing, gravy and pumpkin pie ….thanksgiving is a feast to be remembered and a celebration of the harvest! But why does it have to be the same each year? We aren’t saying don’t do the turkey, we’re saying there are ways to spice up the traditional treats we all hold so dear so that this thanksgiving is the most memorable yet!

Let’s focus on revamping a more traditional dish: baked sweet potatoes. Don’t get me wrong, baked sweet potatoes will be delicious no matter what, but double baked sweet potatoes with pecans or pumpkin seeds are twice as delicious! Here’s what you’ll need: 6 large sweet potatoes, 4 tsp butter, 1 tsp cinnamon, ½ tsp ground ginger, 1 pinch cayenne, and either raw pumpkin seeds or chopped pecans to go on top of your scrumptious sweet potatoes! First, bake the sweet potatoes for 40 to 50 minutes at 375F. Let them cool to room temperature. Then cut the sweet potatoes in halves and remove the flesh. Mix with the butter, cinnamon, ginger and cayenne. Then put the flesh back into the skins and choose pecans or pumpkin seeds as your topping. Bake for 10 minutes, and serve your delicious new take on baked sweet potatoes that is sure to please all of your guests, even the traditionalists!

Whatever meal you choose and how to prepare it this thanksgiving, the most important part of the event is celebrating the tradition of the harvest with your family and friends.  From the Kidco Kitchen enjoy all the wonderful local produce and make sure you go for a big family walk kicking the fall leaves to build up a healthy appetite.  Gobble, Gobble!
